Did You Know: Fun Facts about June

June has always been a month that we long for.  As kids, it marked the end of school.  It marks the start of summer.  It’s full of notable holidays like Father’s Day and Flag Day.

If you find yourself looking for some June-themed trivia, we’ve got you covered.

June Calendar

June’s birthstones: Pearl, Alexandrite and Moonstone.

June’s birth flower: Rose.

June’s zodiac signs: Gemini (May 21-June 20) and Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Did you know that June wasn’t always the 6th month of the year?

The early Roman calendar actually had June as the 4th month.  And it only had 29 days until Julius Caesar reformed the Roman calendar.  Can you even imagine June as anything but a summer month?  Unless you live in the Southern Hemisphere.

Roman Goddess

Did you know how June got its name?

There is a little discrepancy with this answer.  Some say it is an answer to May.  In Latin, May stems from the words for majors or elders.  So, June derives from the Latin for juniors.

On the other hand, many believe June was named after Juno.  That’s Juno the Roman goddess and not the pregnant teenager.

Now that we’ve got the basics out of the way, let’s take a look at some of the lesser known (but more awesome) holidays to celebrate during the month of June.

Did you know that June is both Candy Month and Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month?

Even though they are polar opposites, they can both be equally delicious.   It’s important to promote making healthy choices and fresh fruits and vegetables are the way to go.

I’m sure the kids would much rather prefer celebrating Candy Month but you can make Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Month seem more appealing.

Let’s face it, kids love costumes and characters.  There’s no better way to promote healthy living in June than suiting up in a hilarious fruit or vegetable costume.

Another way to promote fresh fruits and vegetables is to get kids involved.  Have them plant some of their favorite fruits or vegetables in the yard.  If you don’t have a yard, let them plant in a pot so that they can watch it grow!

Tukery Hat

Since we’re talking about food, I think it’s the perfect time to talk about another food that’s celebrated in June.  In addition to candy and fresh fruits and vegetables, June is also National Turkey Lovers’ Month.  If you like to gobble up turkey, show off your pride as a turkey lover with a comical turkey hat!  As for a little more trivia, in America alone, during National Turkey Lovers’ Month, 353 million pounds of turkey is consumed.  Take that Thanksgiving!

So whether you’re celebrating your dad, your pet or your love for turkey, June is bound to be a blast!

Know any other cool facts about June or any June holidays we missed?  We’d love to find more reasons to celebrate as we ring in the summertime!
