Hundreds of mermaids were seen strolling along a Brooklyn, NY boardwalk on Saturday during the annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade on June 22, 2013. The honor of King Neptune and Queen Mermaid were given to Judah Friedlander and Carole Radziwill, respectively.
Coney Island USA started the parade in 1983. It marks the beginning of the Coney Island beach bathing season and celebrates the beach. It is an event that represents artistic expression and is fun for the entire family. This is a wacky and crazy event where both women and men don mermaid costumes and march from West 21st and the Surf Avenue to West 10th Street. Marchers with push/pull floats go to the Boardwalk and march West to 15th Street. Why not stop along the way and take a ride on the famous Cyclone roller coaster.
Most of the mermaid costumes that are worn in the parade are hand made creations and are truly one-of-a-kind. The elaborate use of body paints and strategically placed seashells has never been more prevalent then at this mermaid gathering. In addition to mermaids there are many other sea creatures such as Neptunes and other mythological sea creatures. There are many store bought costumes to be seen there too. I spotted Popeye and Olive Oyl, Ursula, Ariel and a variety of pirates.
Following the parade there is a Mermaid Parade Ball where fully costumed gatherers can enjoy live entertainment.
Coney Island is the only place I know of that has a mermaid costume parade. Perhaps you can start one in your town. be sure to get your Mermaid costumes and accessories so you are fully outfitted for the next Mermaid Parade.
